The LENS is an FDA certified neurofeedback system, that uses the same feedback EEGs as do all the other neurofeedback systems. The Low Energy Neurofeedback System (The LENS) is an EEG biofeedback system being used in clinical applications and research in the treatment of central nervous system functioning. The LENS differs from all the other systems in that it recognizes the electromagnetic field properties given off by them all, and makes allowances in the training process to productively use those emanations.  The LENS has been refined over the past 20 years, systematically capitalizing on the properties of these electromagnetic fields. The LENS has highly developed assessment and treatment tools.

Clinically what is observed is that the shift in amplitude is accompanied by a reduction of symptoms.  This includes symptoms such as pain, headaches, depression, as well as cognitive, mood, and energy problems that are a major part of fibromyalgia.  Stoke patients recover movement and clarity to various degrees, depending on the areas damaged.  More severe problems require longer treatments.  For severe damage requiring many treatments, families have been trained to use the equipment at home and administer it regularly.  The results have been very good.  Mild to moderate traumatic brain injury patients have been seen to easily recover ability to take in information, improve in short-term memory, organization, sequencing, prioritizing, sensory discrimination, initiation, confidence, assertiveness, and sense of humor. Depression, irritability, and explosiveness respond within the same six sessions.  Historically, minor brain injury in formerly high-functioning patients has been treated with LENS with a mean training time of 6 sessions to their pre-morbid baseline level of functioning.

Barring a new head trauma there have not been any relapses or regressions after treatment.  Two instances have been noted in which patients were very near the end of treatment and new traumas caused a return of symptoms.  These were more easily treated than when treatment began; and the both regained their former level of good functioning.

Functional improvements have also been observed with those who have ADD, ADHD, depression, early stage progressive disease (without stopping the diseases) such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, autism and Asperger’s, and childhood cerebral palsy.

It is important to note that the qualitative results from the LENS training are the same as those from other forms of neurofeedback that use an operant conditioning approach; yet, the LENS accomplishes symptom reductions in approximately one quarter the time, with the same durability of treatment effects.

“We don’t want to substitute our “good idea” of what the brain ought to be doing for allowing it to regulate itself, and monitoring the effects of what we do, to see if the patient is changing within the bounds of comfort.”- Dr Len Ochs, Founder of LENS.

Len Ochs, Ph.D is an experienced neurofeedback practitioner and one of the pioneers in the field of biofeedback, (honored as a pioneer by the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback) discovered the elements of a very different neurofeedback system that has been refined over the decades.  It has been used with over 100,000 clients in six continents.

Addictions, dependenciesDrug or alcohol addiction and dependency, eating disorders; substance abuseLack of clarity about emotions and self-comforting, defensiveness, argumentativeness, cynicism

v  Connect-time with the EEG averages 4 minutes per session, brief enough for many who cannot tolerate sitting for a long time

v  Movement artifact neither detracts from clinical efficacy, nor does it have to be removed

v  Cognition and attention are not necessary: can be used with infants or autistics

v  Nothing to practice; no homework

Statement from the Father at the End of Training at Age 33 Months :
"Before the treatments Dylan could not walk, crawl, feed himself, talk or think for himself.  During the treatments Dylan started crawling and talking.  Then he started feeding himself, stack blocks, and color by himself.  Shortly after he began walking by himself.  Dylan now has a vocabulary of 250 words, he can take 20 steps by himself.  He is now a normal boy."

                                      LENS vs. Traditional EEG BioFeedback

LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System)   Traditional EEG Bio Feedback

Feedback:  very weak radio frequency based on the frequency of the brain waves  (There is no electricity going into the brain!) Feedback: sights and sounds on the computer, based on the brainwaves
Change happens because the radio frequency is new information for the brain. The brain is able to change it's activation patterns. Change happens because the brain is gradually taught to produce the desired activation patterns.
Client tasks: sit quietly Client tasks: learn to perform to keep rewards coming by achieving threshold requirements.
Approach: The whole brain is treated, working from most functional to least functional sites. Approach: treat "problem areas" as defined by the therapist, based on assessment findings.
Duration of feedback: less than 1 second per site.  Often several sites can be done in one session. Duration: EEG training may last 20 minutes or longer.
Sustained results seen in 5-40 sessions. Sustained results in 20 to 100 sessions, or more.
